Roger Hodges fourth collection of worship songs comes lavishly produced in art work and music.  This CD finds Roger once again in the studio, with one live song thrown in for a rousing closing. On first listen I thought this is not a bad CD, to enjoy songs on first listen is always a good sign.   Further listens revealed the heart of a man sold out for Jesus!  He has sat down and taken great care over the recording of this album.

There are many strong songs featured. Songs that are singable, worshipful and could well be used by other bands looking for worship tunes to cover.  The music has a Pop-Rock feel.  Competently played and vocals are excellent throughout.

I played this CD over and over again, as I did, I found small little touches that were surprising and could be missed without close listening on repeated plays.

The first song “Let the music play” has a nod to Chris Tomlin, an anthem of praise for the redeemed!  In fact Roger does sound like Tomlin, which is a great compliment! (Catch the great keyboard strings as they fade away!) “Edge of the world”  is next. A harder song to get into, but I think it’s mainly because of the amount of words, but it has an effective musical climax.

A frantic rock song called “Spinnin” is driven by maniacal guitars, and yet masterfully tied into a tight package! I could see my Youth Group getting into this, with plenty of places for actions and dancing! (Changing keys is always a great dynamic in a song, Spinning’ has it as do at least two other tracks. It works to great effect.)

“I will Lift You up,” is one of my favorite songs on this CD. A Small child’s voice introduces this upbeat, bouncy song that has some effective breaks and links.  The chorus is excellent and has all that is needed to make a song an instant worship favorite!

“Thanks God,” with some interesting v ocal effects, I felt that Roger was trying to do a Techno-Matt Redman song here, and it works well, has a nice intimate loving atmosphere.  The last line of the chorus,  are words we should all be singing!

“Thanks, God!  For saving me, when I could not save myself.”

“The Voice of the Lord,” is another song with a driving beat and a strong vocal line! Dynamically leading into the chorus.
I could not help feeling that, like me,  Roger listens to many other worship leaders, for I feel Robin Mark could well have been proud to have written this song!

Space does not allow me to mention the other songs of which “Freedom Song” and “Love You,”  were beautiful expressions of praise to God.  If you have not yet heard a Roger Hodges CD then this would be an excellent introduction to his music.

Soul Survivor is about knowing Jesus and making Him known. In the summer of 2001, fifteen thousand young people gathered together at our UK festivals. Together we sought a brighter vision of Jesus, and a vision of who we can be in His name. This CD captures something of our passionate, reverent response, as we stood in awe of the Saviour.

  1.  Making melody - Matt Redman
  2.  Maker of all things - Tim Hughes

  6.  The noise we make - Chris Tomlin
  7.  Light of the world (Here I am to worship) - Tim Hughes
  8.  When I survey (Wonderful Cross) - Chris Tomlin

11.  I lift You high (You must increase) - Matt Redman

Your Name's Renown

After the successful 'Message' mission to Manchester in 2000, Soul Survivor returns to it's festival base in south England for this year's occasion. Co-founded by Matt Redman, SS seeks to encourage young worship leaders in their gifting and to enable Christians to worship God with passion and abandonment. Thus it is that numerous acts have made their recording debut with this enterprising label, and that thousands of young worshippers find spiritual release and nourishment at the annual summer event.

Matt and band open the set with a couple of brand newies, the typical MR sincerity of 'When my heart runs dry' coming over with especial impact; elsewhere his version of a Baloche classic is more upbeat. Tim Hughes and Martyn Layzell have each been likened at times to Redman in both style and sound. Such comparison is just, but these guys do write and deliver some good songs! Tim shares three, all of which will also appear on his long-awaited, up-coming studio album - including the excellent (and already popular) 'Light of the world (Here I am to worship)' . Martyn's unhurried, exalting 'Jesus Christ, Emmanuel' is equally effective, while US guest musician Chris Tomlin shares his loud, best-known 'Noise we make' and a fine adaptation of 'When I survey'.

Soul Survivor is not just about making exciting music for a new generation. It's albums, seminars and festivals are intended to change lives, to turn folk's hearts closer to God in holy intimacy, with the outward result of more godly lives. Matt sums it up well in his closing 'I lift you high' - another new one - 'You must increase / I must decrease, Lord / I'll bow down and You will be adored'. May we each make similar heart-felt response.

LIFE WORTH LIVING
by Drake McCalister
www.newsoundchurch.com

The cover pic may be monochrome, but there's nothing 'grey' whatsoever about the music on this varied indie disc! The recording is the concept of Washington State's Drake McCalister, who, in 1999, along with wife Crystal and close friends Tim and Deborah Clark, founded the NewSound Church in Seattle. Now connected to the Foursquare group of churches and situated near the University of Washington, the congregation is pastored by the McCalisters, with Drake of course also leading worship.

He composed all these dozen songs too, in an assortment of styles which kicks off with some energetic slabs of pop-rock praise. 'Above all names' and 'The Jesus song' are great praise-anthems, while 'Be our God' and 'Jesus, I worship you', while slightly more restrained, are hardly less potent. The title-track is meaningful and eminently singable, others like 'Ecstasy' are raw and edgy; yet others ('I come', 'Break me') are intimate and poignantly prayerful. The uncomplicated lyrics focus thoroughly on Jesus, these along with the (often considerable) sleeve-notes to each song suggest an utter passion for extolling His name and living true Christ-like lives. (An amusing aside is that the songwriter seems to unwittingly refer to every track as 'one of my favorites'!).

Drake's lead vocals sound clear'n'strong; musicianship throughout is pretty neat too. The result is a formidable collection of contemporary praise that truly rocks (but is never hard).
"Life Worth Living" is well worth hearing!
