DREAMS & VISIONS
live worship from
Re.vive @ Stoneleigh 2001
worship led by
Paul Oakley, Matt Redman,
Rhys Scott, Phil Varley, Phatfish
from Survivor Records

Songs:

1.  Unashamed
  2.  Pageant of triumph
  3.  River of God
  4.  Almighty God
  5.  Fragrant Oil
  6.  Lord let your glory fall
  7.  Prayer
  8.  Salvation
  9.  High wire
10.  I see the Lord
11.  Holy ground
12.  I see you hanging there
13.  Be lifted up

Revive is the alternative Stoneleigh experience, recorded at the same UK event, but with a gutsier, youth-focused sound. The series has increased in cutting-edge sensibilities over the years, but the 2001 release has gotta be the sharpest one yet. Gen-X praise can too easily focus on guitar-drenched sounds, turned-up amps and hyped emotions, but Dream & Visions, while ever passionate and fresh, seems to genuinely capture the essence of worship - and that's ultimately what makes this disc.

Paul Oakley, as always, leads the set, introducing a whole batch of smart new songs. Vibey anthems like the opening blaster and 'High wire' truly rock, while the simple, closing 'Be lifted up' starts off gently then builds up into a potent chorus of infectious, adorational praise. Wonderful! The ubiquitous Matt Redman steps in with my favourite of his - the irresistible 'Let Your glory fall' (one which appears on none of his solo albums, incidentally), and Phatfish render their own classic 'For the cross (I see You hanging there)', a divine moment indeed. Then there's two of the simplest tracks, which are also among the most striking; performed by Rhys Scott and band, 'Almighty God' and 'I see the Lord' are gorgeously worshipful, totally in keeping with the overall mood.

Not just a set of fine songs, this is an experience that truly challenges the motives of the worshipper. You just can't listen to this and not be moved. Under the overall theme of 'dreams & visions', pastor Matt Hosier states pertinently 'Our vision needs to be Jesus, a vision so beautiful & so precious that we will gladly give everything else up for it'. What a vision. But then, what a God!

Even before it began, the 11th annual Stoneleigh event was set to be a landmark occasion. For this convention, the largest single-site Bible Week in Europe, was also to be the last. However, instead of it being a time of sorrow at things coming to an end, it was seen as signifying a time of change and exciting new possibilities, seeking God for the direction forward.

Musically the event serves to bring to the wider Church the very best in recent songs of congregational worship through this hour-plus record of passionate, intimate praise. Unlike some past Stoneleigh output, the major part of
The Father's Embrace consists of songs composed within this group's own ranks. Thus we find gorgeous modern hymns written and sung by the likes of Kate Simmonds and Stuart Townend, whose 'In Christ Alone' is destined to be a classic, if it isn't seen as such already! Other infectious songs come from the pens of Tim Hughes, Darlene Zschech and Ireland's Brian Houston, who's rhythmic, country-flavoured 'Your whisper' adapts delightfully to church settings like this. But it's Phatfish's rendition of their own stunning praise anthem 'There is a day' that wins this day - hope-soaked lyrics, steady beat, rising atmosphere, and Louise's soaring vocals all add to create a most moving experience. A downside though, is that, while nearly all these songs are no more than one year old, most have in fact appeared elsewhere first; indeed four showed up on the comparable In Christ Alone earlier this year.

Nevertheless, this is a terrific set of fresh church songs, relayed here with compelling vibrancy. Ever a missions-oriented group, Stoneleigh end this series with a 6-minute reading of 'The nations of the world', reminding us of 'the breadth of our calling, and the extent of the task before us'. A sobering call to intercession - urging us to accept the challenge to 'Go'.

RETURNING
Live from Holland
with Don Potter, Peter Helms, Recabite Band
www.recabite.nl

Neither Don Potter nor Peter Helms and The Recabite Band are strangers to continental Europe; Don is popular here with conferences (inc. a live Swiss venture with Lilo Keller in '99) and MorningStar output; Pete and the Band have played all over Europe and beyond in the last 10 years (inc. Albania and Siberia!) and have no less than 7 live recordings behind them. The present disc was recorded in their home country of Holland during the Rise Up Europe 2001 convention.

Don comes over in fine fettle with his upbeat 'I believe' creed (you'd better like it, it lasts 12 mins plus prophetic extension!), and the excellent 'If my people' (based on 2Chron7:14 and first heard on the
Generations compilation). In compliment to this, Angie VanDemark lends her strong, soulful voice to the charm ing 'I'm returning', and again to the light jazz-funk of 'Blessings'. Here and everywhere the 8-piece Recabite Band are competent, offering some emotive spontaneity on 'Spirit come', whose laudable classical violin strains are unfortunately unaccredited (presumably concert violinist / part-time band member Tijmen Wehlburg).

This is an intriguing disc (what do you expect with Don Potter at the fore!); most times it is highly effective, occasionally less so ('I'm free' is a fairly inharmonious melee of 'gospel' sounds and verbal communications which leaves me rather unmoved, though I do like the 'Satan has been disarmed and defeated, which means he has no arms and feet anymore' line!). All in all, the diversity of sounds and obvious gifting of musicians gives this album plenty of appeal. Kinda impressive!

WONDERFUL MERCY
live from South Africa
from Vineyard Music

While hinted at in the rather insipid Winds of Worship series, it's these fully home-grown international ventures that provide best evidence of the musical talent, charm and creativity within Vineyard congregations world-wide. We've had Vineyard USA (longstanding!), Vineyard Canada, Vineyard UK & Eire, and now.....Vineyard South Africa !

No less than seven worship leaders and as many writers share their (mainly new) songs on this disc; most names are unknown outside the country, though Sibusiso Ntsala's sensitive 'Moving with the lamb' was first given airing on WoW14, also being taken up by Rita Springer on her
Created to Worship project. Two other Ntsala gems appear here; viz. the gorgeously soulful 'Mmoloki Warona (Our Redeemer)' and the catchy title track, which is one of two calypso-types on the set; with a third song - Kevin Prosch's 'Show your power' - receiving ethnic African adaptation! Other tunes come in perhaps more typically Vineyard fashion - often with a warm choral support - most notable among these are the anthemic opener and 'Bring me back', both led by Thys Meades, and the gently beautiful 'Something happens' and 'Teach me to love'.

The album closes appropriately with the potent 'Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika' ('God bless Africa' - may this genuinely be our persistent prayer of intercession too), sung in both the Zulu and Sotho languages. While the occasional track is slightly weak in impact, overall this is a fine session of sincere worship, full of diversity and overflowing in spiritual blessing.
Wonderful Mercy is well worth a hearing!
