For some considerable time now I've been more than a little impressed with worship sounds stemming from Canada.
Garry Mulgrew is worship leader at Abbotsford City Fellowship, BC, and while this is the first I've heard of him, already has one previous recording to his name.
"Pour Out your Spirit"
is an eight-song collection, five of these being self-composed. Things set
off to a rocky start with Darrell Evans 'Whom shall I fear' - a tune which incidentally, appears on neither of Evans' solo discs. Right away you can tell that this musician has real talent, carrying a strong,
pleasant voice. And while his rendition of a Redman classic ('Let everything that has breath') is able enough, it's Mulgrew's own tunes that are most winsome. The yearning charm of 'Leviticus Song' (based,
oddly enough not on Leviticus, but on Psalm 29 and Numbers 18!) and 'Pour out Your Spirit' are most appealing, while 'Day and night' is a worshipful delight. Garry's wife Kim lends lead vocals to the
catchy pop punch of 'Waves of grace' (nice lyrics too), while the 9-minute 'You are holy', like 'Day and night', is based on the praise section of Revelation, and is a simple, moving, unhurried
offering of sincere adoration, making a beautifully humbling note to end on.
For an independent release, "Pour Out Your Spirit" has a surprisingly good
sound. You'll love the lyrics, the music and most of all the obvious dedication of this worship leader. I envisage other artists seeking to use these songs in their own sets - that is, once they discover them! Should we
tell anyone of this well-kept secret from the north?!
