I first saw Lindell Cooley on a Brownsville Video a number of years ago. Two things struck me, the size of his huge music books placed on his keyboards
and that the Brownsville crew were charismatic to the max! Yet this new CD, “a long awaited return to revival” is a definite lower keyed Lindell. It’s refreshing! There appears to be more of an attempt to work on
the song structure, instead of the songs trailing off into spiritual spontaneity, although there are still some of those songs around, but they work well, especially noteworthy is the monumental request for revival “This
Time!”
Maybe it’s the influence of Lenny le Blanc who is far more commercially orientated, that has given this album some excellent and enjoyable, well crafted tunes. Strong guitar riffs start the title song, and it
has a great chorus, supported by an all-star vocal cast, including such well-known names as Lisa Bevil and Vicki Hampton. Track two is vintage Cooley, mixing rock and roll with gospel soul; it works and is an upbeat sing-a-long
tune! “This Love,” is up next pushed along by dominant electric guitars. Hold onto your heartstrings, as you won’t want to miss any of the 11 glorious minutes of “Your mercy goes much deeper!” With an
amazing guitar solo and some heartfelt words of love to Jesus.
The beautiful song “Oil Of Your Spirit” moved me. Enjoy the restrained guitar and the shuffling Gospel feel. Then we have a jazz influenced track that I
have been singing all day, “Faith in You.” These songs sound like studio recorded tracks, it is as if the audience has been led into a dreamy, laid-back frame of mind. They cannot be heard till the song finishes.
A Rolling Stones sounding “Gimme Shelter” guitar intro and we are into “Love came down.”
This is a very strong album from Mr. Cooley. I thought that I was not going to enjoy it, but I have played it a number of times
and it has revealed new little musical touches and vocal renditions each time! There are many strong tracks and even if they do not all get used in the church by praise bands searching for songs to lead their congregation in
worship, they are easy to listen to and they will minister to you if you make this purchase, which I recommend.
