UK dance team dba are no strangers to the music scene. Originally formed back in 1990 with name dba65
and intent of sharing the gospel with school pupils and students, they made a couple of noteworthy recordings; while the band became gradually whittled down to husband and wife team Robbie Bronnimann
and Shaz Sparks. With a shift in focus from the 'Christian' to the club scene, dba are steadily building a solid reputation, and the release of several 12" singles has attracted much
attention. Now signed to the dtox record label and appearing a full five years after their last album, Spectrum is taking the dance world by storm!
Whether you're into the club scene or
not, you're gonna find this music fresh, uplifting and wonderfully convincing! Built on Ronnie's creative, tantalising programming sounds, Shaz's clear, soaring vocals (she has been favourably compared to
Eurhythmics' Annie Lennox) shine out from every track. The music is inspiring and diverse (I used to think all modern dance tones sounded the same!) - most with an uptempo pop-dance beat and thoroughly
infectious chorus line. It's clear this duo are experts in their field. Whether it's the rousing title-track anthem, the moody, stirring atmosphere of 'When the light has gone'
, or the frantic, techno-edged 'Bunsen burner', the effect is awesome. Largely autobiographical, the lyrics often require considerable deciphering, (I still don't know what 'Millology'
is about!), though the couple seek to share universal concerns such as nostalgic joy on a 'Summers day', despondency when things go wrong ('Smiling girl'), and even the death of a loved one.
But the reality of their faith is also evident, as on the prayerful 'Oceans of love' and 'Will you still be there', a gorgeously sensitive ballad and the only slow-paced song on the album.
This latter track was written by 80's pop icon Howard Jones, who co-wrote four other songs with dba and also helped produce the venture. Indeed, as an established keyboardist, mixer and producer,
Robbie has previously worked with artists such as Delirious? and soon to work alongside Madonna! One particular beauty of this disc is that, while there is an uncluttered, spacious feel throughout, the
innovative structure of tones and textures allows you to pick up something new on every listen. Excellent craftsmanship, beautiful songs - Spectrum is definitely something to sing and dance about!
