The Mennonite group of churches derives its name from Menno Simons, a Dutch pastor who helped reorganise scattered Anabaptists
persecuted in the 16th Century by both Catholics and early Protestant Reformers. Mennonite presence in North America dates back to 1683, and though known for their totally pacifist stance, various groups differ on other
doctrinal matters. Based in Albany, Oregon, and formerly known colloquially as 'little church in the country', Plainview Mennonite Church holds to definite evangelical beliefs, with an emphasis on new life
in Christ alone - hence the motive and title of this vibrant CD!
Holy passion and joyful exuberance mark this output from the start! Most songs are written by music pastor Roger Hutley, one or two by Paul
Hermandez, and it is these two who provide fine lead vocals throughout. The upbeat flow of the opening 'Revival', 'Together we will lift You high' and 'Jesus' all exude an infectious, accessible
charm, the edgy latter holding impressive lead guitar intro and break (a tasty feature on many tracks). It's three attractive, uptempo tracks that close proceedings too, my favourite being the bold 7-minute
determination of 'Not afraid to stand'. Sandwiched between these movers are four intimate, reflective songs, all highly conducive to deep, sensitive worship. 'You give everything' is an expression of
all-out commitment in response to Christ's sacrifice for us; the flowing 'Fly away', with its irresistible group chorus, eagerly anticipates His second coming, while the tender, piano-based 'Understand' is
a vulnerable dialogue with the Father, the One who truly understands. |
