I have to confess, I've had a soft spot for The David Crowder Band
ever since I first heard their stunning debut 'All I can say'
- a 1999 release - which deeply impacted me, and which I still consider one of the most significant and exhilarating worship recordings of all time. Since those fledgling days - aided by a relentless touring schedule and with some heavy dozes of publicity (I know: I'm on their mailing list!) - this band has become a significant force on the US worship scene - further helped, of course, by their regular appearances at the successful
"Passion : One Day" events.
Illuminate
rose to fast and giddy heights of record sales when it was released recently. First of all - meet the team who created it. We've got David Crowder (vocals, guitar), Jason Solley (guitar), Jack Parker (guitar), Jeremy Bush (drums), Mike Dodson (bass), and Mike Hogan (electric violin, record scratches). They're a tight-fitting combo and, let me tell ya, they're on striking form with their latest disc - a real power-house of gutsy praise! The first half of the album consists of one potent praise anthem after another - the whole band just throw themselves into abandoned adoration with all the energy they can muster - boy do these tunes rock! Tracks like the self-explanatory
'O praise Him' and 'Open skies'
virtually implore you to raise your arms and give focused thanks to the King. Some noteworthy individuals help out on these two numbers........... string-man Jerry MacPherson, the legendary Charlie Peacock and British vocalist Chris Eaton are among those
'Additional musicians' credited. As for 'No-one like You' - this too is an explosive piece of praise worthy 'illumination'. You'll love its energy.
Crowder has proved before his ability to bring contemporary edge to a hymnal oldie. He does it here with a strikingly thoughtful version of 'All
creatures (of our God and King)'. The more adorational part of this worship experience begins here. The acoustic 'Only You'
is stripped-down Crowder at his most vulnerable and endearing. With aching vocals, he aids magnificently in turning our hearts towards Him. Beautiful stuff. Depth and emotion continue on the more ethereal
'Deliver me' and the melodramatic 'Heaven came down'. Then there's another treat to close with - 'Stars' is classic David Crowder in contemplative folk mode.
Illuminate
moves convincingly from rocking 'praise' to tender 'worship' with a rare combination of passion and sensitivity. In a nutshell, this is a great disc - I love it!

CAN YOU HEAR US? by David Crowder Band |
|

|
Given that the first release from David Crowder
and band came out under the pretext of University Baptist Church, which Waco fellowship Crowder helped birth back in 1995 and in which he ardently works as Music and Arts Pastor, Can You Hear Us is officially - but not effectively - the debut recording from this
visually distinguishable Texan dude with his thick-rimmed specs and long goatee beard! It's been almost four years since that first stunning performance, so it kinda goes without saying that this output is
er...long awaited! In natural course there have been several line-up changes - although, along with David, Jack Parker and Mike Hogan still remain from the original team.
That creative, edgy rock-worship sound remains too, running through much of these 55 minutes proceedings - a thoughtful collection of mainly new and
Crowder-composed songs. While the 2 min acoustic opener is no match for last album's stunning title track, numerous songs here reveal a similar vulnerable honesty and humility. Two in point are the
self-abasing / God-aggrandising 'Obsession' and 'My hope', initial slow-burners which, like many of these God-focused songs, build majestically in atmospheric potency as they progress.
Equally poignant, and arguably the album's highlight, is 'You're everything', a pensive, explorative ballad reflecting on God's sovereignty in our lives. 'Our God is loud' carries the
album's title line and comes with simple, stirring anthemic hook-line, so too 'God of creation', which holds the album's most memorable and melodic chorus. As for non-originals, the vibey
'Thank you for healing me' is wonderfully re-vamped from the previous disc; we're given another fine rendition of an old hymn, and on the 'Undignified'
bonus, Crowder's energetic vocals sound uncannily like those of the song's composer, a certain Mr Redman! |

Searing, passion-drenched guitars and driving percussion attend most tracks, with some moody 'choral' and eerie
programming underlying 'All creatures..' and others. Hogan's emotive violin and David's acoustic guitar also show up on quieter moments, and all these sounds, along with Crowder's impassioned, rootsy vocals,
makes for an utterly demanding listen. Though perhaps not reaching the extremes of stilling tenderness nor all out rock-throttle of All I Can Say
- this is yet another stonking album! Released on sixstepsrecords, Crowder and co. take fine place alongside fellow innovative praise rocksters Chris Tomlin and Charlie Hall; such promotion certain to give this disc the deserved attention which the first album sadly failed to universally achieve.
Can You Hear Us? Why not crank up the sound
for a moment and let everyone hear! Such compelling tones are far too good to selfishly keep to yourself!
