A musical based on the Welsh Revival of 1904. Why Me is the new studio album from Mal Pope containing only
music from the musical production. In 2003 Mal started thinking about the centenary of the 1904 Welsh Revival and the more he read around the subject the more he became convinced that the story could be the basis of
a concept album and also a piece of musical theatre for the stage. The central character is a 26 year old ex miner named Evan Roberts. In 1904, Evan Roberts claimed that he had spoken to God face to face in
his little house in Loughor, Wales. He said he had been commissioned to lead a religious revival which would touch the whole world. It would have been easy to laugh or dismiss his claims except that within weeks Evan
had become the figure head of a movement that turned Wales upside down and which drew worldwide attention. The story of the revival is told through the eyes of journalist and peace campaigner W T Stead who visted
Wales during the height of the Revival to interview Evan Roberts. It starts on the 14th April, 1912 in the smoking room of the Titanic. The album features Mal’s band the Jacks and features some of the
biggest recordings Mal has ever made. |
