Ok, so the amazingly popular Stoneleigh Bible Week event bailed out gracefully in 2001, and with it
of course the live output of same name with its annual batch of sprightly, pointed songs giving a fresh breath to worship expressions in churches all over the land. What we've got here though is essentially
'Stoneleigh re-enacted'.......an excellent selection of tunes as fresh from the pen as buns from the baker, wonderfully varied in tempo and tone, and performed by musos from the same pioneering fellowship that
hosted that now defunct festival.
The opening strains of the effervescent, heart-pumping 'Jesus Christ Holy One' suggests that this album might, just might, be kinda special. And it is! Funk-tinged
vocal performances from Phatfish's Louise Fellingham are as stunning as her fair appearance - soaring to the sky on that first anthem as well as on a number of others, including the more methodical 7-minute
'I stand amazed', a beauty written by Paul Oakley way back in 1990! As for P.O. himself, moving renditions of the arm-lifting 'Standing on holy ground', and the beautifully simple 'Be lifted up'
are given - both initially featured on the "Revive - Dreams & Visions" album but now finding deserved wider audience - as well as one rouser of a closer! Kate Simmonds, whose oral tones I can't help
comparing to those of Ms F, shares two gorgeous self-penned tunes from her latest studio disc, while similar pattern accords the lyrically-rich delivery of Stuart Townend. (from his recent
"Lord of every heart" recording).
One standout moment is a simple, hymn-like 'Holy Spirit how I love You', which begins in arresting, unaccompanied form, then rises gently to worship
heights before ebbing once again. New Frontiers was recorded live, though
as far as sound quality is concerned, you'd never know it - thanks here no doubt to production assistance of expert David Zaffiro. Technically, a terrific follow-up to the blessed "In Christ Alone";
practically - it's great to know the Stoneleigh spirit flows on in majesty and moving power!
