This is the fourth in Soul Survivor's Emerge series promoting seven-song works of fresh sounds from
enterprising young UK musicians (following Johnny Parks' enthralling 'live' set two months ago). This time it's 100 Hours turn to display their creative talent - a YWAM-based foursome with the envied
opportunity of sharing gospel truths through music and teaching all over the world. I can tell you that, though not in my dictionary,
Cardiphonia is 'a sound/song/ecstatic noise that comes from the heart'
, while for a spiritually insightful explanation of band name, check out www.the-factory.net/band
.
Heart-expressions these truly are - the album rocks with throbbing emotion, built around a strong percussive drive and
Tre Sheppard's solid, jangling guitars and impassioned lead vocals. Blistering, full bodied tracks like 'I won't let the rocks cry out', 'Taste and see' and the beautifully anthemic 'Were there words'
strain to proclaim the high praises of the Lord while 'You are holy' is a more directly simple song of worship. Essential harmony vocal textures from Tre's wife Tori are especially evident on later tracks
like 'You have been good to me' and 'At the foot of the cross', a thoroughly moving ballad with choir accompaniment.
Cardiphonia in fact follows on the heels of last year's acclaimed Lift recording, and while it's true that
there are three new tracks here not included on Lift, the previous album contains no fewer than ten
fine songs not aired here! Further, it must be said that, while this is a totally fresh recording, the quality of Lift is just as strong, and again features mixing / production skills of Paul Burton. So given
the small price difference and twice the play-time, Lift would seem the better buy. Either way - you're gonna be in for a heart-pounding treat - for the sound of 100 Hours is one Cardiphonic delight!
