Although this is her first solo recording - and I assure you, it's a stunner! - you may have come across the name of British
singer / songwriter Cathy Burton before. She has featured on several Soul Survivor albums in recent years as well as releasing an EP with her own band Blueberry in 1999. In addition to this Ms
Burton provided backing vocals to Delirious?' 2001 Audio Lessonover
and even had the privileged yet daunting experience of appearing as solo support act on a recent UK d-tour (she also resides in Delirious?' home town of Littlehampton, attending same church as various band members).
Burn Out is a thoughtful set of intelligent, self-penned pop
songs, every one brimming with infectious creativity and soul baring, non-cliched lyrics, providing a sound that remains fresh and interesting even on oft-repeated listens. Both the versatility and vulnerability of her
compelling vocals draw comparisons to the striking sound of Sixpence's Leigh Nash or the gentle, wispy tones of Sarah Masen, as Cathy breathes emotion and searching honesty into every lyric. With an assortment of
drum programming, loops & additional arrangements, guitar contributions from members of UK bands Dust, Sabio and Kindle, and deft keyboard abilities, the album comes over with true
professionalism and diversity. Add to this authentic choral swathes (c/o The Chantry Choir) on the title-track, the occasional inclusion of Matt Weeks' flugelhorn / trumpet, and tender string vibes on the achingly
sublime 'Sending' and the beautiful closing ballad 'Belongs to you', and you're ensured a thorough mix of exciting, moody unpredictability.
Husband Paul Burton has worked on many recordings so it's little surprise to find his production/mixing/recording talents utilised here! The album was in fact originally
released independently last year, but has been completely remixed for marketing by Fierce Distribution, only the second UK act to appear on this wing of Delirious' Furious? label. The disc is already
receiving high acclaim, and rightly so, for Cathy's is a unique sound you won't forget in a hurry. Burn Out is a commendable, artistic gem!
